May 12, 2023, is going to be double hard for me. Sunday is Mother’s Day, which makes me think of the recent loss of my Mama. Even more recent is the loss of my son, Mark. His birthday is May 12, 1986, and he passed away on February 8, 2023. Mark was only 36 years old. In all honesty, I’m heartbroken and full of guilt and grief.

As born-again followers of Jesus Christ, it’s impossible to understand God’s plan from a human point of view. Also, faith doesn’t mean you or I will not suffer or feel pain on this side of eternity.

I felt pain like no other recently. My son Mark was our prodigal child who never found his way back home. We looked and looked for him, but it was as if he fell off the face of the earth. I always knew I’d get “THE CALL” a Mother never wants. I already knew beforehand.

Below is a transcription of a message left on my cell phone on February 9, 2023, at 11:36

Hi Angie, my name is _____. I am an investigator in Denver, Colorado. I am looking for the family or anybody who may know a gentleman named Mark Shumate. I’m trying to reach family or someone who may know Mark. I have no other leads other than some phone numbers that I was able to find. If you know Mark, or even if you don’t, could you just return my call and let me know? I just have a couple of questions if you do know Him, and I would appreciate it if you could call my direct phone number. Again, this ____, and I’m an investigator for the city and county of Denver and looking for Mark Shumate. Thank you!

I still have the voicemail on my cell phone. I have no idea why I can’t delete it, but I just can’t. There are also two voicemails from a grief counselor and the Colorado police department.

I didn’t want to call the number back because I already knew it, and I suppose I was avoiding it. The woman asked me if I knew Mark Shumate, and I said, “Yes, I’m His Mother.” She then told me all the details and I’m keeping private to honor Mark’s memory. All I could think about were bible verses for faith in hard times, and I was coming up empty then.
