Give It To God
If you have read my testimony, you are well aware I was in an abusive marriage for almost fifteen years of my life. This experience has left me broken and shattered to a degree that affects me to this day in many ways. For the most part, I dealt with it well. Well, at least I thought I did.
I found myself unexpectedly in a not-so-good scenario. I quickly found myself cowering in the corner, trying my best to keep from trembling and falling apart. I hadn’t had an anxiety attack hit me like this in years, and I Lost!
Trust What God Says About Anxiety And Fear?
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2
But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. Isaiah 43:1
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. Fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 1 John 4:18
Anxiety and Fear can fill us with worry and dread, therefore causing us to disobey our trust in God. Not only this, but it’ll rob us of our peace and joy. Are you aware the Bible uses the phrase “fear not” at least 80 times? It’s crucial to learn how to overcome anxiety!
Separate Yourself From The Source Of Anxiety
See, Friends, I usually do whatever I have to avoid confrontation with anyone! Period! First, I hate it because it brings back too many unpleasant memories, and I keep to myself to avoid it altogether.
I believe I’m “safe” if I keep others at a distance so they will not have the ability to physically harm me again. EVER!! In my thinking, this scenario is the best way for me how to overcome anxiety.
In reality, it’s avoidance, and this isn’t healthy. We must learn the importance of taking every thought captive.
If I find myself around people who are showing any signs of becoming angry, aggressive, demanding, or confrontational, trust me, I get away as quickly as possible.
It makes me extremely nervous, and I’m not going to give specifics, so please respect this by not asking for details, but I will share this much with you.
I had an encounter recently with an individual that reminded me so much of my ex-husband’s behavior pattern that I was more than ready to bolt.
I saw the anger, resentment, and raging behavior almost instantly. The longer I was around this individual, the more anxiety crept its claw into my whole being.
Don’t Fight Anxiety In Your Strength
Finally, I wasn’t in the best frame of mind, and this isn’t an understatement! I’m ashamed to admit this, but it’s the truth.
I need to learn how to stop feeling anxious in these situations and overcome fear when it runs rampant in my mind.
Give It To God And Remove The Overwhelming Panic
I’m a child of God, and I should have been stronger! Where did I go wrong? I didn’t give it to God in the first place! I should have prayed for God to remove the overwhelming panic and fear that had me fighting anxiety in the first place.
Trust God Promises Not To Be Afraid
I should NOT have allowed the fear in my mind to replace my faith and assurance in my heart, and I let God down by not calling on him to fill me with His Peace!
I didn’t even think about it at the time. God is my strong tower, the one I can cling to because I couldn’t get past what was before me!
Don’t Panic And Stay Calm
I have not had this type of fear and reaction in a long time. Maybe it stems from a place where I haven’t had to worry about this type of behavior since leaving my abusive relationship.
As a result, when I got alone, I couldn’t shake the experience happening to me. My whole body started shaking and trembling, and I couldn’t get it to stop.
I remember saying over and over again I thought the individual was going to hit or harm me. A friend of mine is trying her best to bring me back to reality.
Honestly, I don’t know how long they held their hands on my shoulders while telling me, “Angie, look into my eyes. You’re safe now.”

Don’t Give In To Fear
Friends, talking about a complete hot mess! Could it have been a panic attack? I don’t know, maybe. Possibly an anxiety attack? Again, I’m not sure. I realize now how to overcome anxiety.
My husband, Mike, is the most loving, gentle, kind, and compassionate man in my life. I do not fear him because he has NEVER given me a reason to feel threatened by him in any way, shape, or fashion. I thank God that He knew who I needed in my life and sent him my way.
Avoid Feelings Of Failure
Furthermore, what’s so bad about this particular incident? Many people witnessed my meltdown. I felt ashamed, embarrassed, and humiliated. Do they think I’m crazy? Do they understand why I reacted the way I did? Will they think less of me?
Do Not Listen To Lies
When I think back on how to overcome anxiety in the first place, how did I allow this to affect me the way it did?
I thought I was stronger than that! I love how the Holy Spirit works. Deep down in my heart, I already knew the answer.
Fear is an ever-present reminder for someone who’s been in abusive situations. As hard as I fight it, sometimes I lose.
Don’t Let Satan Have The Upper Hand
Sadly, I tried to handle the situation with my strength. Fear gripped me instead of allowing God’s peace to sustain me.
When we do this, it opens the door wide open for satan’s lies to have free reign in our minds, making us doubt God’s protection over us. False assumptions and accusations will fill our minds with his lies.
Avoid Being Prideful And Accept Help
Instead, I let pride prevent me from allowing others to help me. I don’t want to be seen as weak, and I should have separated myself from it to start with.
As a result, if another issue arises, I know who I MUST turn to: my Redeemer, My Rock, My Fortress! That is God Almighty and him alone!
I messed up BIG TIME, and I need to be honest with you and me and admit that. When this happens again, I need to take my advice on overcoming the spirit of fear.
