What Does the Bible Say about Serving Others in Need?

Do you know when you offer a helping hand in need to another you are serving God? When you are serving others you are serving God.

I have a confession and conviction that is weighing heavily on my heart. I have passed many in this situation. How can I be a Christian and just pass by the scenario in the above photo and not try to help them?

Have you been there?

I suppose if you are like me you try your best NOT to make eye contact and will start looking for coins to distract your eyes from meeting theirs.

We don’t want to witness the shame and sadness reflecting back at us. Sadly, many people play on your heartstrings. Now I am NOT saying all do.

People Fall On Hard Times

So many genuine people have fallen on hard times and never thought they’d be homeless. How would you feel if that ended up being you? Then you have some people who have become this way due to addictions.

Maybe you have loved ones who have pushed and used family and friends to the point they can no longer be trusted. Some cannot help themselves at all due to emotional or mental health issues. Sadly, some flat-out refuse help.

Regardless, do you find it hard to block the image from your mind no matter what you do? It makes you feel like the worst person EVER because you didn’t do anything and then dwell on it, right?

Thoughts On Serving Others

I should have…

  • Give them something.
  • Taken them something to eat.
  • Drove back another day and saw if they were there.
  • Are they cold?
  • Will they be OK?

What people need more than anything is love, compassion, and understanding. Talk to them about the one who loves them more than anyone ever could.

Do you wonder why many businesses and churches can’t open their facilities when it’s freezing weather? Many could but choose NOT to do so. It may be out of fear and worry.

Suppose they do NOT want trouble and in today’s world, it’s hard to tell the difference between helping and hindering. You do not know what has happened in their lives for them to be in this situation.

Do You Often Do The Following…When It Comes To Serving Others?

  1. Tend to judge first and ask questions later.
  2. We want to judge if they are worthy of our help first then we will give them aid.
  3. The individual may be sincere but how do we know that?
  4. How do we know that they aren’t going to use what we give them for something other than food?

Simply put you don’t know, however, God does! God’s word tells us to help the poor and needy repeatedly. You are NOT to seek the treasures of this world but store up treasure in Heaven.

god wants to use you for serving others in need

As you can tell by reading this post it is centered on helping the homeless but the same is true for those who just need a helping hand. Here are ways you can HELP.

1. Be Educated

There may be numerous reasons why an individual becomes homeless. Only God knows the reasons.

It can be due to the lack of…?

  1. Affordable housing
  2. Loss of a Job
  3. Divorce
  4. Health-Related
  5. Substance Abuse,
  6. Domestic Abuse

Don’t be judgemental in trying to understand how they became homeless.

2. Show Respect

As I stated earlier do you often avoid looking at them out of pity and not knowing what to do or say? I spoke to a man not long ago and he told me what bothered him most was losing his dignity. He also said he often didn’t ask for help because of pride and judgment.

3. Consider Donations

Here is a list that doesn’t involve money. It’s genuinely showing the love of Jesus by serving others.

  1. Clothing
  2. Shoes
  3. Food
  4. Non-perishable items
  5. Blankets
  6. Coats
  7. Cups and utensils

4. Offer to Volunteer

What better way to show the love of Jesus than going to your local homeless shelter by serving others and at the same time sharing your testimony of coming to Christ? Who knows, it just may plant a seed.

5. Reach out

Invite them to your church for worship service. Offer moral support when you can.

6. Job Opportunities

My church is big on community outreach projects. My suggestion is to ask your church to get involved in something similar if they haven’t done so. Sadly, I’ve seen cases where the homeless want to work but can’t find a steady job.

7. Become an Advocate

If we can do nothing else everyone has access to a telephone right? Contact your local organizations to organize food drives or fundraising events to help fill up your local homeless shelters.
