All Sin is Equal Right? Why You Can’t Have it Both Ways

All sin is considered equal, right? Does everyone deserve to receive God’s grace and mercy? As a Christian, you want God to forgive your sins, but the bigger question is, do you want God to forgive all sins? What about sins of another individual you consider to be a far greater sin than your own? Let’s dive in on why we can’t have it both ways!

If all sin is equal, What Are the Reasons You can’t have it both ways?

We had a guest pastor preach not too long ago, and it likely affected every single individual in the congregation. I’ve also attached the video of the sermon toward the end of this post.

If you walked out of this sermon without conviction, can you say, “Houston, you have a problem?” The following verse puts everything into perspective rather quickly, doesn’t it?

Whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. James 2:10

The Pastor asked the following question:

If you became a born-again believer at a young age or grew up in Church, do you think it is harder to appreciate God’s grace compared to if you became a follower of Jesus Christ at a much later age?

He suggested that we can take God’s grace and forgiveness for granted much too often. Do you think that’s true? I agree with him 100%.

All Sin is Equal

I often say you can’t straddle the fence. You’ll have to excuse my Kentucky slang. I will elaborate on what I mean by this. In my personal opinion, you can’t have one foot in the world and one in the Church. You can’t have it both ways.

I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! Revelation 3:15

So, because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. Revelation 3:16

For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. Revelation 3:17

The more common phrase I’ve heard is you can’t live for the world (satan) Monday through Saturday, and you’ll be good to go to Heaven by living right on Sunday. As the most well-known phrase states, (You can’t have your cake and eat it too).

In all honesty, however, many people believe these phrases. As the old song goes, everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. Just because you attend Church on Sunday does not guarantee you a heavenly reward.

As Christians, we want God’s grace and mercy when we sin, but we also want God’s judgment on the sins of others. Does this attitude align with God’s word? No, it does not!

Reflect and remember your life before accepting Jesus

Do you remember all the sins God has forgiven you for? This also includes all sins you thought were secret. FYI, all sins may be hidden from man. However, nothing is hidden from God.

You must remember how you lived your life apart from Christ. This, in and of itself, should be a reminder to change your attitude toward how non-Christians live their lives, right?

You are forgiven for all sins, past, present, and future, because Christ has redeemed you and set you free from them.

Granted our lifestyle compared to another lifestyle may be something we would never consider. However, in God’s eyes, ALL SINS are filthy rags in his sight, regardless!

We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. Isaiah 64:6

Now, I don’t know about you but there are countless things I would love to turn around and do over. Not only this, but I shouldn’t have received God’s forgiveness.

That being said, I know without a doubt God has forgiven me once I repented and asked for his forgiveness. However, there are things I allowed to happen that I knew were wrong, and I have to live with that.

What Are Five Specific Truths That Grace Is For Everyone

1. God’s word says so

Even though I have received God’s grace and mercy in this, I feel someone else should NOT. That is so wrong of me!

Answer the following questions:

1. By your actions and attitudes, who do you consider as “too big a sinner” to be able to receive the gift of grace that God extends?
2. Why is it contradictory to think someone doesn’t deserve God’s mercy?
3. How are you going to extend the same grace to others that you have received from Jesus Christ?

2. Grace Is By faith alone

For the longest time, I felt my first husband didn’t deserve God’s grace. He abused me physically, verbally, and emotionally for almost fifteen years. I certainly did not want to extend him grace. No way! You know when the Holy Spirit is convicting your heart.

I’m just thinking, really, Lord?

I can not do it! Look at all he made me endure! All the suffering, isolation, and hurt! I even attempted suicide because I felt it was my only way to stop the pain!

3. Grace is for everyone

Do you mean to tell me that if I want to receive God’s grace, I must extend it to Him?

Softly spoken in my spirit…..YES!!

Now, I just feel sad for him because he’s living apart from God. My Prayer is that he will fall to his knees in repentance and ask for God’s grace and mercy.

I haven’t seen or spoken to him in a very long time, but I have told him…I forgive you! Trust me, it didn’t happen overnight. It took a long time. In all honesty, it took me way longer than I care to admit.

YOU WANT TO HAVE IT BOTH WAYS, DON’T YOU?

However, sin is sin!

You would rather hang on to…That’s not fair, God! Think of how you would answer the following questions.

1. What do you most complain about or get angered by? How does this reveal your “fairness/entitlement” way of viewing issues?
2. To whom do you compare yourself? Does it involve pride or envy?
3. Whom do you gossip about because you resent their success? Are you begrudging God’s generosity towards them by blessing or not punishing them?

4. God’s Grace and Mercy mean sin cuts both ways

Consider the following accusers. Be honest. Do you want to have it both ways as far as God’s showing the same grace and mercy?

5. Sin is sin

In all honesty, in my spirit, I struggle the most in this area. Forgiveness for all sins, Lord? All sins such as these?

1. A pedophile who molests our children.
2. A rapist that brutally harms another’s body.
3. An abuser who repeatedly destroys the spirit of someone.
4.  Sex trafficking rings prey on our young for money.
5. A murderer who never gets punished for taking a loved one’s life.

These are just a few. Trust me when I say my list can go on and on for all sins I feel shouldn’t receive grace and mercy. To God, sin is sin!

The brutal truth on all sin is equal and why we can’t have it both ways

1. It doesn’t matter what  “I think” is “right” and “wrong,” but what God says is “right” and “wrong!”
2. I don’t get to pick and choose who “I think” “should” or “shouldn’t” receive the gift of grace! That is left to God and him alone!
3. I must stop thinking “my sin” isn’t as bad as “their sin!” All sins are Sins…Period!

As much as you would like for God to not extend grace to____? You can fill in who or what you want. The truth is that the grace you have received is the same grace that God offers to ALL.

Keep in mind that you can’t have it both ways. So yes, this includes everyone, even the ones we do not necessarily feel are worthy of receiving it.

If we want God’s grace, we have to extend it. We can’t have it both ways, sweet friend, when it comes to all sins.

What is the unforgivable sin according to the bible

Blasphemy

“Blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.”

Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Matthew 12:31

What is sin according to the bible?

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins. Ephesians 2:1

In which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. Ephesians 2:2

Among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. Ephesians 2:3

And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds. Colossians 1:21

We has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him. Colossians 1:22

If indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister. Colossians 1:23

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  2 Corinthians 12:9

All Sin is Equal? Sin cuts both ways! If you want to receive God’s grace and forgiveness in your life for all the sins you have committed, you must be willing to extend the same grace given to you regardless of the circumstance.

Also, remember this…In God’s eyes, it doesn’t matter! Sin is sin…If you are guilty of stealing candy, and another person is guilty of being a pedophile, you are both worthy of receiving God’s grace “IF” you have a repentant heart and ask God’s forgiveness, God will extend it to both!

I used my Church pulpit curriculum for the majority of this post because the questions they want us to answer reveal what’s in our hearts, and that brings conviction, repentance, forgiveness, and grace.
