Friends, what are your words and actions saying about you? Possibly a better question to ask is are your words and actions a reflection of Christ? Have you ever said something out of anger that you regret and want to take them back? I know I certainly have.
Are your words and actions a reflection of Christ one-hundred percent of the time? No one other than Christ is perfect so I believe it’s safe to assume NO! Words often fly out of our mouths and after the fact, we think now why did I go and say that! Hello, can I have a rewind, please!
Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way. Once words are spoken, they can not be taken back no matter how much we Pray they could be. The damage has been done, unfortunately!
Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
In other words, what’s truly in our heart, will flow out of our mouth. Whether that be good or bad.

Words and Actions Must Be a Reflection of Christ?
How can we be a reflection of Christ in our words and actions? What are some examples of Christ’s character? Jesus displayed a…
- Trusting heart, that produced an encouraging tongue.
- Loving heart, that produced a gracious tongue.
- Faithful heart, that produced a truthful tongue.
- Peaceful heart, that produced a reconciling tongue.
I can only speak for myself. I would much prefer to use my tongue to encourage and uplift others in the same way my Heavenly Father did. In order to be Christ-like, we must love and speak like Jesus.
Actions Become Words
Notice I used the word prefer! I do NOT always follow Christ’s example. I know as a Christian, that’s what I’m called to do. Now ask me if I follow his example always? That would be a big NO!! Sad but True!
I am human, and I’m flawed by nature. However, that does NOT give me the excuse, to treat people poorly, and say things, I know good and well I shouldn’t. Now here is where it gets real. Get ready to roll your pants up y’all, cause it’s gonna get deep in here real fast.
Satan comes only to steal, kill and destroy. John 10:10
Satan Uses Our Words and Actions Against Us
Satan thrives on us using our tongues in a manner that isn’t pleasing to the Lord. He uses every trick and ploy at his disposal so we can beat ourselves up over them again and again. Here comes the truth. Now see where you find yourself being convicted of a:
- The critical heart produces a critical tongue.
- Self-righteous heart produces a judgmental tongue.
- Bitter heart produces a harsh tongue.
- Ungrateful heart produces a grumbling tongue.
Can you see your heart in how your words flow out in these suggestions? I know I am guilty of all of them! It burdens my heart to admit that. But the truth will stand when the world is on fire. If we aren’t willing to admit these truths to ourselves how do we ever think we will stop letting them control our every word.
Accountability for our Words and Actions
We do NOT realize or we flat-out do NOT care that the power of the words we use can destroy! Words can be the death of marriages, families, friendships, churches, reputations, and the list can go on and on. It’s in the heat of the moment, we tend to lash out, and think what we said later when we should be using encouraging words of hope
Actions Not Words
More often than not we speak harshly to the people we love most. We’ll sit and dwell on what we spoke, and let our words fester like a blister. You already know what comes next. We start pointing fingers, at anyone and everyone but ourselves!
We will try to excuse our actions and behavior. You started it! It’s your fault! No one wants to admit they were in the wrong in how they approached something or handled a situation and say I’m sorry and we should forgive like Jesus.
Be ye angry, and sin not, let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Ephesians 4:26
Speak the Truth in Love
If we go to bed angry it gives Satan a foothold in our mind and heart. Have you ever heard this phrase? If you give them an inch they’ll take a mile. Same concept here. Satan will try to twist and turn your words and will have you believe ALL kinds of lies that what you spoke is justified.
We can NOT allow that to happen. It will set you on a downward spiral that you don’t want to be on. Trust me on that! I’ve been there done that more times than I can count!
Think Before You Speak
Do whatever is necessary to calm down. If you find yourself getting angry and want to lash out at another remember as Christians, we are to be a reflection of Christ. Count to ten, walk away or leave the room. Do what it takes, to make you be the man or woman you know you should be.
Humans are sinful and full of selfish pride. Not only this but scripture tells us out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. More often than not they’re painful daggers being thrown at our loved ones and friends. When those who observe you in an unguarded state what do they witness and hear from your words and actions? Y’all there are bible verses about being careful what you say!
WWJD: What Would Jesus Do?
What would Jesus think of your words and actions? Would he be proud or disappointed? Jesus is the one we are to imitate! Trust me, I know how hard it is not to want to verbally attack someone who is coming at you full force. Satan works in those instances more than any other time in my opinion. Our enemy does NOT want us to follow Jesus Christ’s example in actions and words.
WDSW: What Does Satan Want?
Satan wants discord and friction and he doesn’t want us to forgive the one who has wronged us! If he keeps us in separation from those we feel have wronged us or vice versa, he is winning! Guess what! I have read the last book in the Bible. Satan, DOES NOT WIN!
Bible Verses About Being Careful What You Say
I have listed scriptures below on words and actions. Trust me, Friends, I am reminding myself, of these Scriptures also
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words, you will be condemned. Matthew 12: 36-37
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29
But now you must put aside all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. Colossians 3:8
The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. Psalm 37:30
The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off. Proverbs 10:31
Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
