What are the Best Tips to Overcome Fear Biblically in 10 Action Steps

As born again followers of Jesus Christ it’s crucial to understand what fear is and how Satan uses our fears against us. Do you know fear is the opposite of faith?

Trust me, I have a big ole finger pointing at myself with that statement as well. Overcoming the spirit of fear is hard. However, it’s an absolute MUST to trust God’s word as truth. Read and pray over them until you gain peace.

To Overcome Fear is knowing where the root of fear is coming from

In all honesty, it’s not a matter of “IF” we will encounter fear but “WHEN” we encounter it. Even the disciples faced fear and what did they do? They turned to Jesus!

Jesus Calms a Storm

One day he got into a boat with His disciples, and He said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out. Luke 8:22

And as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. Luke 8:23

And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. Luke 8:24

He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even winds and water, and they obey him?” Luke 8:25

Any time fear knocks on the front door of our heart, we must refuse to answer. Remember this sweet friend, if you give Satan an inch he will take a mile.

With that said, however, God wants you and I to walk by faith, and Satan wants you and I to walk by fear.

overcome fear in life and live by faith

In all honesty, if you and I would learn to overcome fear and trust in the faithfulness of God we would be living a more fulfilling, and joyful life in Christ.

Sweet friend, please keep in mind, the devil’s job is to feed our fears with lies and to defeat us where and when we’re most vulnerable. In doing this, Satan knows he’s keeping us from what God has called us to do.

trust God is with you always

When fear comes remember that God is always with you. The key point to keep in mind is that God has told you that he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Trust the Holy Spirit

When we’re afraid we can trust in the Holy Spirit’s protection completely. To put it another way, God is for us so what can man do, right? Memorize the following scripture.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalms 56:3

remain strong

Remember you shouldn’t be weak but courageous in trusting God. When you are afraid remember the assurance knowing you are on God’s chosen child.

Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love. Ephesians 1:4

He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will. Ephesians 1:5

10 Action Steps to Overcome Fear Biblically

Have a healthy fear of God…NOT man

Replace fear of man with good fear. When you fear God, you live in a way that reveres him instead of the fear of man.

Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” Exodus 20:20

Fear ruled my life for so many years and what I’ve learned (the hard way) is it’s giving the fear to live rent-free, so to speak, in our mind. You must learn to face your fears head on to release them.

pray for peace

Fear can get the best of you at times. Instead, ask God to send his peace to your heart and to silence the fears completely.

Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! Psalm 37:1

Trust in the Lord, and do good dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Psalm 37:3

name your fear

When fear is sneaking its way into your heart it’s important to understand to speak aloud what you’re fearful of. When you are feeling afraid, put a name on it and give it to God.

Keep a journal and write your fears in it. This will help to actually keep account of what you are afraid of so you can pray over it and give it to God.

monitor your thoughts

The spiritual war against Satan begins in your mind. Once you make the choice to trust God completely rest assured that spiritual warfare will come. Guard your thoughts and block the fears.

My friend SunShyne Gray has an excellent course on taking every thought captive that I highly recommend. She’s a Christian counselor and incorporates that into her teachings.

surrender your fear

Surrender your fears, one at a time by giving them to God by praying. Pray, “God, please take the fear of ___ from me. I give it to you.” Keep praying and fighting until the anxiety and fear releases its grip.

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? Luke 12:25

make the choice to not fear

Keep in mind it’s Satan’s job to keep your mind distracted from anything to grow the Kingdom of God. Fear is Satan’s biggest attack on your mind and he knows your pain points…Remember this!

remember God’s promises

Replace fear with the armor of God. Write down the scriptures of God’s protection found in the Bible. Read them aloud to yourself daily.

“The remarkable thing about God is that when you fear God, you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else.”

– Oswald Chambers

“When man’s terror scares you, turn your thoughts to the wrath of God.”

-G.K. Chesterton

“If you fear God, you really need fear nothing else.”

– Zac Poonen

“We fear men so much, because we fear God so little.”

-William Gurnall

  1. Thanks Angie for such solid tips on how to overcome fear! I have actually been thinking about the past few days that even though I have been walking with the Lord for a number of years (although not nearly as many as a lot of other lovely women!) there is still a struggle to surrender negative thoughts and fears to God. But it is such a good reminder to remember that we shouldn’t fear man, but fear the Lord

    1. Thank you so much, Michelle. I can totally relate to the negative thoughts as well so you are not alone in this trust me. If you have read my personal testimony or watched our video testimony on God at Work you are aware I come from an almost 15-year abusive marriage. The demeaning behavior and negative thoughts were thrown at me continuously and after years of that, you start to believe those negative things about yourself. It’s taken me years to get past this and it continues to be a weakness of mine that Satan tries to breakthrough. That said, just know I will pray that God shelters you in His protection and reminds you where your strength comes from. I really appreciate your encouraging feedback very much.
