Since it’s the beginning of a new year I want to reflect on the questions I just asked you. I must admit I feel as if I’m failing miserably. I can only speak myself and your responses are between you and God. You don’t give account to Angie, however, just like myself, we will be held accountable to God.

Now, this is not a guilt trip by no means because I realize I’m guilty. However, I’m personally making a commitment that I MUST do a better job of putting God first in 2020. What about you friend?

Putting God First in 2020

Why Should we be putting God first? because God chose us First

This is one we need to hold on too tightly sweet friends. We didn’t choose God. God chose us. It’s ALL because of Christ and we owe him our complete devotion. You may say, “Angie, Why Did God Choose Me?”

It is an undeniable fact that God has chosen you before you were ever even created. But “why” did God choose you? Is there something special about you that led God to choose you?

The simple truth of the matter is, no, God did not choose us because of anything we can bring to the table. God simply chose us because of His love and mercy towards us, so we can be used by him to bring Glory to His name!

God chose you and I to demonstrate His character. He chose you and I that we may know Him and love Him. Lastly, God chose you and I because of His never-ending love and kindness towards us.

When you’re putting God first: everything else falls into place

If we would only grasp this! When you are putting God first in your life, the other areas in our lives will be in sync with his will.

We must acknowledge our love for God determines the interests we pursue, and how we prioritize our time. The following quote by Ezra Taft Benson states it far better.

“When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities.”

Ezra Taft Benson

Change the direction when you’re not putting God first in your life

Now I don’t know about you but my priorities need adjusting. Life gets so busy pulling us in many different directions. I don’t want that to sound like lazy excuses but it’s true.

At times it feels as if we hit a brick wall of trying to handle things on our own, doesn’t it? Yet it’s during this time when we finally look up and ask the Lord for help! THE ONE WE NEED TO LOOK UP AT TO START WITH right?

See it’s you and I that make our lives so complicated when the truth of the matter is if we’re keeping God first in our lives, everything else will line up correctly according to God’s will.

Don’t get me wrong because I’m not saying our lives will be all hunky-dory, but it does mean that God will be there to help us bring order to our lives

keeping God first is spending time with him in prayer

This is an area that convicts me enormously. To put it another way, we make time for everything else but we don’t set aside the adequate time needed for prayer.

If we were keeping God first our prayer life would come much easier and bolder.

Can you relate to this?

When we confess to be born again followers of Jesus Christ, we will make time for Him in prayer.

Putting God first with the right motives

When we go to God in prayer “Do we do it with God’s glory in mind or our own selfishness and pride?” Yes, I’m guilty of this one as well. Now please don’t take this the wrong way.

I’m by no means saying we can’t ask God to move on our behalf. However, is this “thing” we’re asking God for, is it to advance “HIS” kingdom and to be a blessing to others, or our own?

Can you say OUCH! The truth cuts deep, doesn’t it?

God longs for his children to come to Him in prayer just to be alone with our Heavenly Father. This is the beauty of prayer. Quiet time with God getting to know Him more intimately.

When you and I desire to draw near to the Lord it will be seen in our prayer life. This being said, how is your prayer life?

when putting God first in your life his direction for us is clear

Putting God first in your life is doing what “HE” would have us to do vs what “WE” want to do. “HIS” way vs “OUR” way.

Trust me, it’s taken far too long for me to realize God’s ways are far higher than my own.

If we’re seeking God’s direction, the paths we take in life become much smoother.

When “SELF” gets in the way over allowing God to take the lead is when we make a big ole mess of things!

Can I get an AMEN!

Are we acknowledging the importance of walking with God on a daily basis?

putting God first in your life is living with eternity in mind

Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. Psalm 144:4

Y’all life is so short and everything we do or not does affect the Kingdom. God’s word states our lives are like a fleeting shadow.

This alone should stop us in our tracks and fall down on our knees before the throne of grace. Ask God to reveal the changes we need to make in our lives.

Below are some questions we need to reflect and pray over.

  1. What are we doing now that has an eternal purpose?
  2. What are we doing that’s changing our personal lives, or in the lives of others?
  3. Are we living each day with an eternal purpose in mind?
  4. Do we really grasp the importance of sharing the gospel? Are we actually doing it?

In closing: Putting God First in 2020

I’ve given you many reasons to be putting God first in 2020 along with many bible verses about putting God first, now it’s up to you to apply it in your daily walk with God. We live every day with an awareness of the presence and power of God.

For “‘In him, we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring. Acts 17:28

God is worthy to receive our 100% attention in everything we do, in everything we say, and in everything we think.

As born again followers of Jesus Christ, we have the Holy Spirit inside us prompting us towards righteousness in our attitudes and behavior.

If we will heed to the convictions of the Holy Spirit, we can’t help to be putting God first in everything.

  1. Great post, Angie! You are right. When we put God first in our lives everything else just falls into place. I know quickly when I have veered off the path that leads me closer to God. Things just seem harder, ya know? I was just telling a friend the other day that I don’t even want to begin to imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t given it over to God years ago!

    1. Wow! Absolutely Stacey. It does become harder, doesn’t it? The pruning process is never easy but we grow closer to God in those times too. I appreciate your honest feedback. I don’t know where I’d be today either hun without His grace and mercy. Thanks for your support.

  2. Angie – such a wonderful post. I loved the quote by Ezra Taft Benson. I too am guilty of not putting God first because I’m so occupied with ‘doing’ things for Him and in the last few weeks have realized that I’m not relying on Him like I should. Thank you for this wonderful reminder. I love your heart and honesty.

    1. Thank you so much, Fleda. I’m guilty too. That’s one major issue for us when we’re trying to reach the lost and hurting world but if we aren’t careful it can consume us even when our heart is in the right place. When we do this however whatever our “it” is…becomes an idol to us. Thanks for truthful feedback and I appreciate you very much!

  3. Thank you sweet Angie for these words of exhortation and love. I am taking the scriptures you listed and hoping to memorize them. Love you!

    1. Thanks so much, Sandra. I’m so happy to hear the scriptures spoke to your heart hun. I need to do better at memorizing also. Love You too my sweet friend.

    1. Thank you so much, my dear friend. You are absolutely right. God definitely has a way of getting our attention, doesn’t he? I appreciate you always show me the support you do. It means so much to me!

  4. Beautiful post, Angie, on how and why to put God first in our lives! My guide word for 2020 is “intentional” and I have been convicted by the Holy Spirit to be intentional in how I am living for God. Loved all your Bible Verses too!

    1. Thank you so much, AnnMarie. When the Holy Spirit convicts us of something there’s no escaping it or rest until we obey what we know in our heart is the right thing to do for honoring Him…It humbles you that’s for sure. Thanks for always supporting me!

  5. LOVE this Angie! ❤ Yes I definitely need to work on putting my sweet Jesus first this year. I am too task oriented and run the risk of crowding things, people and God out, even when it was God Who first had me begin working on the task. He has literally taken things away from me before and I realized afterwards that it was His mercy to remove anything that moved Him out of my picture. I love all your Scripture references too. Beautifully written my friend …

    1. Thank you so much, Donna. I understand completely trust me. God has forced me to look at Him and not “people” and to solely trust in Him through Obedience even when it hurts. Thank you for always showing me grace, love, and support
